How to Compare Similar Academic Reputation Nominations Between Institutions

You can use the Similar Nominations report within the Academic Reputation dataset to compare how frequently different universities are nominated together by respondents in the QS Academic Reputation survey.

Step 1: Open the Academic Reputation Dataset

From the HolonIQ home screen, navigate to the Academic Reputation dataset using the left-hand taskbar.

Step 2: Access the Similar Nominations Report

To view specific nomination similarities between institutions:

  1. Hover over the Analytics drop-down menu under the Report section.

  2. Select Similar Nominations.

Step 3: Understanding the Similar Nominations Matrix

The matrix presents a list of universities that have received shared nominations with your selected institution.

Each column represents a survey year, and each row the similarity of a university. A colour code in the bottom left hand corner is used to indicate the geographical region of each university.

Step 4: Analysing Similarity Percentages

Let’s use an example to interpret the data:

  • Selected University: The University of Oxford

  • Comparison University: University of Cambridge

  • Similarity (2026): 73.5%

This means 73.5% of respondents who nominated University of Oxford also nominated the University of Cambridge in the 2026 Academic Reputation survey.

Step 5: Filtering by Subject Area

You can refine the comparison to a specific subject area.

For example, to view similarities within Arts and Humanities:

  1. Use the Subject Area filter.

  2. Select Arts and Humanities.

This shows that 76.7% of respondents who nominated University of Oxford for Arts and Humanities also nominated University of Cambridge, and 27.9% also nominated The University of Edinburgh.

Step 6: Filtering by Respondent Region

You can also narrow your analysis by the region of respondents.

For example, select North America from the Respondent Region filter to view nominations from that region only.
