How do I best interpret the Scatter Plots?

A scatter plot reveals how two indicators relate at the Institution level, showing trends, correlations, and clusters.

Scatter Plot — Exploring Relationships & Clusters

Key components of Movement Charts:

  • Each dot plots one institution’s scores on two axes.

  • Trends – upward/downward slopes indicating positive/negative correlation.

  • Clusters – groupings like “high rep/low citations” or “strong mindset in sustainability.”

  • Outliers – unusual cases worthy of closer investigation.

  • Values - adjust values to either display Ranking, Percentile, or Score values

  • Context - toggle on or off to show comparison to all institutions or specific cohort(s).

Methodology & Indicators:

  • Ideal for showing how metrics like Academic Reputation correlate with others such as Citations/Faculty

  • Useful for plotting Sustainability sub‑scores against Academic Reputation to reveal institutions balancing research excellence and social impact.

When to Use Scatter Plots?

  • Studying correlation (e.g. does higher research output lead to stronger employer perception?).

  • Highlighting clusters: e.g. top-tier research-focused, globally-engaged, or sustainability-oriented universities.

  • Identifying unique performers, such as smaller institutions with high sustainability but moderate internationalisation.
