1. Start with the Filters
Across all Global Student Flows reports, three dropdowns control the analysis:
Source location / Source territory – Where students originate
Destination territory – Where students are studying
Time period – The timeframe you want to analyze
To identify top sending markets, the first step is to select a specific destination in the Destination Territory dropdown.
2. Use the Reports to find top sending markets
Select one of the Source Location Reports
Select a specific location in the Destination filter
Index - Source Location
With a destination selected, open the Index - Source Location report. This report ranks source locations by the number of students sent to the selected destination over the chosen time period.
For example, if you select Canada as the destination and last five years as the time period, the index shows which countries send the most students to Canada, ordered from highest to lowest volume.
Drill down by country, city, or region
The Index report allows you to change the source granularity to answer different questions:
Country level: Identify which countries are the largest sending markets
Regional level: View an entire region (for example, East Asia and Pacific) to understand which countries within that region contribute the most students
To drill down to see which cities send the most students to the destination, you will need to navigate to the Index - Source City Report.
You can also combine these views. For example, you might select China as the Source country in the filter and then switch to Source City to see which cities in China send the most students to Canada over the last three years.
Analyse data with Charts
To understand how sending markets are changing, switch to the Charts report.
Silhouette - Source Location
The Silhouette - Source Location chart shows how student flows from selected source locations trend over time for the Destination selected in the filter.
You can:
Compare multiple source markets at once
Adjust the time period (for example, from the last three years to the last five years)
Narrow the view to a single country to see one clear trend line
Flat Map/ Globe - Source Location
Flat Map/ Globe - Source City
Use the Flat Map/ Globe - Source Location or Flat Map/ Globe - Source City reports to visualise student flows geographically, showing how many students move from multiple sources to the selected destination.
