How to Identify the Largest Source Territories for International Students

Identifying the largest source territories for international students using the Global Student Flows dataset in the HolonIQ platform.

Updated yesterday

Step 1: Access the Global Student Flows dataset

From the HolonIQ home screen, you can access the Global Student Flows dataset in two ways:

  • Select the Global Student Flows tile from the main Home Page, or

  • Use the left-hand navigation menu and click Global Student Flows

This will take you directly to the Overview report:

Step 2: Understanding the Global Student Flows Overview rRport

The Global Student Flows Overview report provides a high-level snapshot of international student movement using global source and destination data by default.

In this view, you can see:

  • Total student flows between territories over time

  • A ranked list of the top source territories

  • The number of students from each source territory

  • Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the selected time period

For example, you may see China ranked as the top source territory, with total student numbers and growth rates clearly displayed.

This view allows you to quickly identify where the majority of international students are coming from.

Step 3: Review Additional Context in the Overview Report

To the right of the source territory rankings, the Overview report also shows:

  • Source series (cities students are coming from)

  • Top study destinations

This adds useful context but remains a high-level summary of the data.

Step 4: Navigate to the Source Location Index

To take a closer look at source territories, navigate to the Index section and select the Source Location report.

This opens an index-style table that ranks source territories in more detail.

Step 5: Analyse Source Territory Rankings

In the Source Location Index, you can view:

  • Ranked source territories by total student population

  • Student population values displayed alongside rankings

  • CAGR values shown to the right of the table

Step 6: Filter by Source or Destination

You can refine the data further using filters:

  • Source filter to focus on students coming from a specific country

  • Destination filter to see where students from those source territories are going

This is useful for targeted market analysis.

Step 7: Change how Territories are Ranked

By default, source territories are ranked by total number of students.

You can change the ranking method to:

  • Rank by CAGR instead, allowing you to identify the fastest-growing source markets

For example, a smaller country may show very high projected growth despite having a lower overall student population. These results should always be interpreted in context, especially where sample sizes are small.
