This article will guide you through accessing, filtering, and analysing the reports available in the Global Student Flows dataset.


Accessing the Global Student Flows Dataset

You can start exploring the Global Student Flows data in two ways:

  1. From the Homepage:

    • Navigate to the Student Recruitment Insights section.

    • Click on the Global Student Flows dataset.

  2. From the Menu:

    • Open the main menu.

    • Select the Global Student Flows dataset from the available options.


Types of Reports Available

The Global Student Flows dataset includes the following five report types:

Report Type

Overview

Summary of top sources and destination territories and cities.

Index

Detailed breakdown of source and destination locations, including growth rates.

Charts

Visual representations such as silhouette charts, treemaps, flat maps, and globe views.

Benchmark

Comparative analysis of student flows between sources and destinations over time.

Analytics

In-depth tools including heatmaps and scatter plots for advanced trend analysis.


Filtering Data by Source and Destination

All reports use consistent filters to segment data:

  • Source: The origin region, territory, or city of students.

  • Destination: Where students are going.

Time Period filters let you analyse recent data as well as projections (e.g., next three years or to 2030).

Additionally, the Index, Silhouette, Treemap, Flat Map, Globe will have charts focused on Source Location, Source City and Destination Location.
Example: Under Silhouette, the following charts are available:

  • Silhouette - Source Location

  • Silhouette - Source City

  • Silhouette - Destination Location


Navigating Each Report

1. Overview Report

  • Shows the top 10 source territories/cities and top destinations for your filter selections.


2. Index Report

  • Lists each source or destination location with:

    • The number of students.

    • The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the selected time period.

  • Data can be sorted by number of students or growth rate.

  • Switch source/destination filters and reports to explore flows in both directions.


3. Charts Reports

Provides a variety of visualisations:


3.1. Silhouette Chart: View the evolution of student flows over time.


3.2. Tree Map: Quickly identify locations with the highest or lowest student numbers.


3.3. Flat Map/Globe: Geographical visualisation, zoom in for location level detail.


4. Benchmark Report

  • Allows comparative analysis:

    • Rows = Source locations.

    • Columns = Destination locations.


5. Analytics Reports

Advanced analytical tools:


5.1. Heatmap: Read data as a colour-coded table; darker shades represent lower numbers.

  • Analyse evolution and projections over time.

  • Compare multiple territories or cities.

  • Switch data views between counts and percentages.

  • Copy data to clipboard or download as CSV.


5.2. Scatter Plot: Visualise trends, identify major sources or destinations, and observe growth or decline using the growth rate axis


Accessing the Flows Explorer

To explore and segment data further:

  1. Click the dropdown next to the dataset name.

  2. Select the Flows Explorer.

  3. Apply additional filters (source, destination, time period, etc.) for deeper analysis.


Tips & Key Points

  • All reports are structured around Source and Destination concepts.

  • Time period filters let you analyse recent data as well as projections (e.g., next three years or to 2030).
