How to Identify Your University’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) at a Subject Level

Step 1: Access the Subject Rankings Dataset

From the platform home screen, navigate to the left-hand side menu and select “Subject Rankings.”


This will open a high-level overview of how your university performs across different Subject Areas when compared with your Benchmarking Peers.


Step 2: Review Subject Rankings Overview

In this view, you can see where your university ranks across various Subjects.


Subjects are grouped under broader Subject Areas, allowing you to quickly identify performance across related fields.

Step 3: Access the SWOT Analysis Report

To analyse performance more strategically, open the SWOT Analysis report.
You can find it under the SWOT option under reports


Step 4: Understand the SWOT Analysis Layout

The SWOT Analysis provides a detailed breakdown of how your institution performs against Benchmarking Peers across four key areas:

  • Strengths

  • Weaknesses

  • Opportunities

  • Threats

This comparative view helps you identify competitive positioning and generate strategic insights at a Subject level.


Step 5: Interpret the Visuals

On the left-hand side, you’ll see bar graphs for each category.


Each section includes up to five individual subjects, with your institution represented by a dot marker.


To the right, another chart shows your university’s ranking relative to peers, broken down by:

  • Top and bottom quartiles

  • Interquartile range

The selected university is highlighted for easy reference.


Step 6: Adjust the Display Metrics

By default, the chart displays rank data.


However, you can change this view to display:

  • Percentile

  • Score

This allows you to tailor the analysis based on your preferred data metric.
