Getting started in the Data Studio

An introduction to HolonIQ's Analytics and Visualization Engine

Updated this week

The Data Studio is HolonIQ's proprietary data analytics and visualization engine. It is a dedicated and immersive space inside the platform for building deep insights and exploring global market intelligence.

The Data Studio was developed in-house by our data science team to help our customers build deep insights rapidly by taking out the time to extract, transform and load data into third-party tools like Tableau and to immerse our customers in the next generation of advanced analytics and visualization tools.

Charts/Pre Built Templates

As soon as you click into the Data Studio, you will be met with existing Charts of the most popular visualizations ideas for our customers. This is a fast way to get insights on specific trends (i.e, Month-over-Month EdTech Private Funding Deals, or Upskilling Deals over the Past Year, etc.), but also serves as inspiration for how you might want to design your own analysis.

How To Start Building From Scratch

Building your own visualization from scratch follows a few simple steps:

Step 1. Click New Chart, then Pick a Data Type

You can select from analysis of Organizations, Deals, People, and Developments

Step 2. Build your Search Criteria

Use the filters for each data type to search for your criteria. Broadly speaking, you might consider geography, or a specific Education Market Topic to start. For Funding, maybe getting down to a specific funding amount or range. For Developments, you might consider Categories and Sub-Categories (click here for more our Global Development Taxonomy) for specific types of market activities. Each of the Data Types have filter options specific to the dataset so be sure to view the range of filters you can select.

Step 4. Select a Chart Type

The analysis will always show in a table first to get a feel for the data and provide feedback for your filters. Right away, you can download the table version of your data as a CSV for external analysis (Please note: there is a download limit of 10,000 rows for Tables in the Data Studio - here's more on sharing data from the platform).

Once you have the data you are looking for, choose a chart type to start visualizing the data. Please refer to any of our Chart Type help articles which include more technical instruction for the design of each chart type, as well as best use cases for each.

Step 5. Design your Chart

Pick from a variety of design preferences such as which variable to color the chart by, which variable to size the chart by and other design preferences. Depending on the chart you would like to use, you can change categorizations in the 'Design' section of the Data Studio menu.
