How do I get an Overview of Regional Rankings

What are Regional Rankings, how to navigate, and basic search

Updated yesterday

QS publishes several region focused rankings, including:

  • Arab University Rankings

  • Asia University Rankings

  • Europe University Rankings

  • Latin America & The Caribbean Rankings

A university will only be ranked in maximum one Regional Rankings. If the Regional Rankings statistics are not available for an institution from the Master Peer list, it could be because:

  • they are not ranked in their region

  • there is no ranking published by QS for that specific region.

Getting Started

Before you begin analyzing an institution from the Regional Rankings dataset, familiarize yourself with the key interface elements located at the top left of the screen:

  • Dataset Dropdown: Select the desired Dataset for analysis (in this example we are looking at the Regional Rankings dataset)

  • Region Dropdown: Choose the specific region to focus your analysis. If you have a Focus Institution selected, only the Regional Ranking available for that institution will be selected. Select Overview in the Focus Institution Dropdown to access the other Regional Rankings.

  • Focus Institution Dropdown: Pick the Institution you want to analyse. Only institutions included in the selected ranking will be available for selection, the others will be grayed out.

Once a Region and Focus Institution are selected, you will be able to access several Reports.

1. Index Report

Offers a top-down overview across all institutions ranked in your chosen subject.

  • Select Benchmark Peers from dropdown (custom list, master peer list, QS lists, regional/territorial lists).

  • Change the Benchmark Period as needed.

  • Use Values buttons to display data as ranks, percentiles, or scores.

  • Optionally group by rank or by change in ranking position.

Note: if you noticed that institutions are grayed out and you do not understand why, ensure your toggles of Benchmark Peers match those of any Region you have filtered.

For example in the below screenshot the Region is toggled to Europe, yet the Benchmark Peers is filtering by the U15 Group in Canada:

2. Highlights Report

Provides detailed performance insights for a single institution within its peer context.

  • Distribution across all Indicators

  • Statistical measures: mean, median, max, quartiles from the peer list.

  • Time series charts comparing the focus institution with:

    • Benchmark Peers

    • Domestic Peers

    • Overall ranking changes over time

  • Focus Institution is highlighted with a bold, coloured line or marked with a dot.

Note: you may find institutions from your Master Peer List in the Focus Institution drop-down list grey out. This is because they are data-dependent to the Focus Region you have selected.

For example in the below screenshot, only universities in Europe are appearing and those outside of Europe are grey-out:

3. Indicators Report

Allows in-depth analysis of individual ranking indicators for the Focus Institution.

  • Indicator map gives an overview of all Indicators.

  • Selection of an individual Indicator displays a detailed report, similar to Highlights.

  • Indicators and their weights adapt based on the selected ranking’s methodology.

4. Benchmark Report

Enables side-by-side comparison of your institution with others.

  • Compare against individual peers or entire peer lists.

  • Option to order your view (e.g., by score, rank, or other criteria).

5. Analytics Report

For advanced, in-depth analysis and data visualization.

  • Multiple visualization options:

    • Heat map

    • Scatter plot

    • Movement chart

    • List view

Troubleshooting in the Regional Rankings Dataset

Issue

Solution/ explanation

A Regional Ranking is grayed out and I cannot select it

You need to select a Focus Institution ranked in that Region or to select Overview in the Focus Institution Dropdown

A Peer is grayed out in the Focus Institution dropdown while using the Regional Rankings dataset

The Peer is not ranked in that Regional Ranking

Data is grayed out/ missing from charts in the Regional Rankings dataset

Make sure that the Benchmark Peers are also relevant to the region
