The 'Play' field for each US-based OPX program categorizes programs in various size and growth characteristics. The four categories include Leader, Growth, Volume and Niche defined below.

CIP Code Background

All US-based OPX programs are matched to an IPEDS 'CIP' code. The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes were developed by the U.S. Department of Education as the national taxonomic standard of academic program titles for federal surveys and state reporting of institutional data. The CIP code is independent of program length.

The CIP code is allocated by each university independently and they are not always allocated consistently. The OPX database includes CIP codes that are allocated consistently across all programs following our own global subject taxonomy.

Leader

Programs that had more than 5,000 conferrals and experienced more than 10% growth nationally using the most recent data available.

Growth

Programs that had between 500 and 5,000 conferrals and experienced more than 10% growth nationally using the most recent data available.

Volume

Programs that had more than 5,000 conferrals and experienced less than 10% growth nationally using the most recent data available.

Niche

Programs that either had less than 500 conferrals with regardless of growth or programs with less than 5,000 conferrals with less than 10% growth nationally using the most recent data available.
